Hey Guys,

Just as a heads up...

Yesterday I installed CWoW on my new (Awesome) PC.
After installing it opened the launcher which I let (stupid me) automaticly update to the newest version of the launcher(only). I got this nice Cataclysm style launcher but as soon as I wanted to manually patch to 3.2.2 for CWoW install my entire WoW folder was locked. Shocked

I had to reinstall WoW again and quit the launcher inmediatly to manually patch.

Only complaint is your RAM. WHY THE HELL DO YOU NEED SO MUCH RAM?!?!?!?!

You're like my aunt - she has 16 cores and 32gb of RAM in her system or something whimsical like that, but she works in a field where it demands that much.

Yeah, no. You just wasted like US$100+ on the excess RAM.

I think all 32bits versions of windows xp/vista/7 only support up to 4gb of ram. So even if it shows 8gb ram in the control panel it'll use only 4gb. You have to use a 64bits version to lift the limit. But 64bits OS sucks caus lots of programs doesn't work with.
SLI is not a waste if you play on a high-res hudge screen Smile

there is a difference between 4 and 8G ram, esp if you run a lot of stuff at the same time

even my wife's notebook has 4G ....

I have win7 64-bits Smile
I have a huge high res screen Smile, but 8 GB of RAM is just as much as an overkill as SLI or a 4 core processor for all that matter.

I cant think of any program I use that is not supported by 64-bits or has problems working on 64-bits.

Nice the thread changed into PC discussion.

Anyone will have an improvement using 8gb of memory if the software he use benefits from it!!! Normal user will only see the improvement by benchmarking their system.

For me i see a major improvement for all the rendering software i use UG NX4, Solidworks, Pro E while running other stuff in the background. Try this with 4 or 8gb memory while rendering a 3D file and watching movie and play wow at the same time u will notice the diffrence (and yes i know its not only memory related its the whole system) Smile

@ STixx: You bought the similar sytem as i was looking at but i changed my spec slightly.
CPU: I7 970, Mobo: Asus P7P55D Premium, Mem: 4gb Kyngston HyperX DDR3-1600, GFX: Radeon HD5970, Power: CoolerMaster 850W, OS:WIn7 64bit

Funny part is i stil use my old HDD from 6 years ago and it lowered my Benchmark a lot, thats soon to be changed.
Also my old power supply was only 650W and i couldnt start the PC with the Radeon only my old GF8800 was working never thought that a PC really might need 850W power supply Smile

Some might say the System is overkilled but i guess its all a point of view, people might spend lots of money on clothing, cars or others i like to spend it from time to time on my Electronic devices Razz

Windows 7 64 bits, what version? Home Basic? Home Premium? I think those support up to 32 gigs of RAM (Ultimate 64 bit even supports up to a goddamn 192 GIGABYTES OF RAM.

Finnaly some support from another enthousiast !! Smile
You really got a nice rig, the 970 it goes well with overclocking, what speeds are you getting at? also at the beginning I was doubting between 2 GTX460 or the Asus Ares. I ended up with getting the SLI 460's just because I always wanted to get something in SLI. Before I always bought the single "powerfull" card with the meaning to later upgrade but at the end I would always buy 1 new card instead of upgrade to SLI or Crossfire.. sounds stupid (as in saying this out loud) but looking in the case makes it worth getting the SLI Smile

for the HHD I would really recommend getting an SSD those things are blazing fast, in my old pc I have 2 WD15000Hfds (10.000RPM) im now using those as my backup drives also in raid0, not using an SSD in your system but getting a normal HDD is like wasting USD 100 on the processor of videocard which you could have gotten cheaper but didtn upgrade to SSD instead (performance wise)!

The first 2 weeks when I got my new PC i didnt play a game on it just busy with Overclocking and playing in the BIOS my furmarks are 29,719 at the moment Smile (still trying to reach the 30,0000 mark without blowing up my PC Very Happy

@Stixx
Was thinking severall times about SLI or Crossfire setup but heard to many complains from friends of mine that they run into some problems even they still liked the performance. The 5970 is basiclly a Crossfire but only on one card.
Yeah the HDD wil be changed but i didnt like the pricing a few month ago for the SSD and to be honest i was to lazy backing up all my stuff at that time. BTW how much did you pay for yours?

No OC at the moment and no benchmarks run yet except the crappy Win 7 rating, Sytem runs very fine as it is so far.

I use Win7 Home which is good enough for me.

I will only benchmark after i got the new SDD and then play around with OC a little, 30K is a good target to reach and should be possible with proper cooling.

you are right, I have no idea how much win I produced with my post. Guess I also have now idea what you are trying to say with that sentence.
I think it might have to do with the fact, that my mothertongue is not english.

Anyway, this whole thread is about what ppl have for new PCs. A techy thread I guess.
I responded to Urubaen's post. Back in 1988 I did have the Macintosh SE. After that Mac got to slow I never bought a Macintosh again.
So maybe Uru can convince me about the positive things the Macs have.
Maybe I should open a new thread for this, not to disturb others. Or I should go out and buy me a new PC and then I might be allowed to post in this thread, and write how much i spent and which components I used.

I don't think this thread is offensive. It seemed to be a good discussion about what ppl have for new systems. A good exchange of thoughts and information.
Some might have the impression I might have highjacked the thread to post some unnecessary informations.
As mentioned I actualy did have the Macintosh SE and I posted the specifications only so that ppl could actualy see the development in the last 20 to 25 yrs.
1MB RAM was standard at that time Wink

So no worries Stixx, you didn't do anything bad.

And for all who are offended and think my post was unnecessary, inapropriate or offensive I appologize sincerely.

Now I can spawn and endless list about how PCs are better but I don't feel like wasting the bandwidth.

You know what? Screw it. It's go time:

PCs are easy to use.
PCs don't cost you and your mother's arms and legs.
PCs have a better overall performance than Macs.
PCs have more native programs and discs than Macs.
PCs are more easily customizable than Macs.
PCs are good hand-warmers.

If it's pre-built then it comes down to WHO builds it. Brands like ASUS and Dell are great. On the flip side, brands like HP are complete garbage. I have a Dell laptop that never breaks. On the flip side, I had 3 HPs that broke within a year of each other. If you're going custom-built, however, you just need good parts and know what the hell you're doing.

No matter the build, macs are good. Razz

Macs are for the cool kids.
Macs can help you join the Kool Kids Klub
Macs make good POWER-point
Macs make good Documents
Macs make good paperweight
Macs make good heater for your desk
Macs make good heater for you legs
Macs are immune to viruses
Macs cannot use exe files
Macs can use .app files
Macs rule.

Uru's list is longer..

PCs look more professional and more srsface
Cheap PCs make good sandbox tools - "cheap" and "Mac" do not go in the same sentence
PCs are affordable on any budget
Macs are NOT invincible, they can still get infected with Mac-native viruses
PCs also make good paperweight
PCs are slightly tougher - I spilled coffee on my laptop keyboard and all I had were a few sticky keys
Microsoft Office is better on a PC

There, I have more than Urubaen.
