Well the 'dead zone' refers to the area that is just too far out of melee range, but too close to fire your bow/gun.
I don't think it has been fully 'removed' as such, but it has been very substantially reduced from what it used to be. The 'dead zone' used to be a very real and noticeable annoyance factor when playing a hunter (particularly in PvP encounters) But Blizzard seriously reduced the 'minimum' firing distance (as well as giving additional 'getaway' options such as 'disengage')
I'm pretty sure there is still a small 'dead zone' but it's barely noticable.
