For foreign client 5.3.0 on Chinese servers 5.3.0
If you are using modified clients revert your backup original files before patching (wow.exe, wow-64.exe, launcher.exe, realmlist.wtf)

Installation steps. enUS locale (US client) used as example.

1. Install the foreign streaming client. Link: https://us.battle.net/account/download/?show=wow

2. TODO EACH TIME AFTER A EU/US CLIENT UPDATE. In your wow folder make a copy of both wow.exe wow-64.exe and launcher.exe, then rename the copies into wow.exe.bak wow-64.exe.bak and launcher.exe.bak.

Do not touch those .bak files until the next foreign client update, so do not replace those files if you applied a chinese launcher update on your client.

3. into the \wow\WTF\folder, make a copy of config.wtf and rename the copy config.wtf.bak. (.bak means backup)

Then open \wow\WTF\config.wtf :

Modify the line

Code:

SET portal "us"

as below,

Code:

SET portal "cn"

IF it doesn't exist add it at the bottom of the file.

4. download one of the font archive below and extract it in your wow folder. You should have \wow\Fonts folder (you need to do this if you want to read Chinese symbols in game.)

5. Start the game with wow.exe or wow-64.exe, never ever use the launcher.exe to start the game.

Important :

- Once your client is updated edit the language code located in \wow\launcher.db into

zhCN

Not doing so may get you into all sorts of trouble when EU/US updates are released before China

- Q : Tried logging in today and constantly getting a new patch required error during login. Anyone else getting this problem?

Updated the guide for pandas. Special thanks to zhengruiw02 in this thread who found the portal trick.

One thing I noticed is the 64bit launcher seems unable to connect on the chinese servers, I get the wrong version message, so if you have a 64bit OS make sure to start the game with wow.exe if you see this message.

Dear bolomas, I find a way to play wow with 64bit client by accident! I downloaded new install program from official site. And I install wow
(CN client) on another disk but on same PC. I just want to find any difference between EN client and CN client. I want to use 64bit launcher(or wow-64). While download and install CN client, I find I can login with 64bit launcher(CN client). And I also find I can login with wow-64.exe (EN client).
There is a new created zhCN folder in Data folder(EN client)! It's created by install program(CN client), but I don't know why.
I am still downloading CN client. And I find login screen was different with different client(CN or EN).
I am a chinese but I like to play with english client for my role was undead. And I got help from here, so I reg and post here immediately.

I installed EN client in E:\World of Warcraft\ and install CN client in D:\World of Warcraft. But there is zhCN folder created in E:\World of Warcraft\Data, and EN client files also locked while installing CN client. I don't know why.

ok, clarify: to DL ENwow version i just revert config and realmlist exe and launcher. then DL then change back. easy as that?

Ok question. Reverted, got loader started, went through some update tools then at 4.3.4 xxxx it sticks and eventually says Cannot connect to tracker.

ideas? my connection or a file issue?

Check your firewall settings. Also sometimes it times out and need to be restarted.

Those files are the new expansion's files that were downloaded in the background during 4.3.4 in preparation for 5.0.4
After patching the client via launcher to 5.0.4 they should integrate into the game's database and disappear. I don't have them now on both of my clients.
In simple words: instead of patching a lot of GBs on the 5.0.4 release day, Blizzard made that patch available to download silently in the background a week or two before it was released.

Yeah never mind... I ran the whole process last night and downloaded the whole lot, I tried various ways to put them in the right directory but to no avail. So just downloaded and its done now thanks

China is still on 5.0.4, so you are stuck until china update.

Wouldn't replacing the WoW Launcher.exe and WoW.exe files with the ones from 5.0.4 client help?
I mean, it worked for me back in Cata when I "overpatched" to 4.3.4

I updated to test a bit and didn't find any solution, changing files crash the game now. Since mop the client is a lot less customizable than before, which means you stick to what is in this guide, or you will have to wait for the next Chinese update quiet frequently.

I have it pass the "playable" phase, but when i did the changes according to the guide, it says "unable to validate version" upon login.

Hello, I'm having some trouble with this First I tried using my old wow, updated it and tried to run it, but got a wow error, was unable to open, art.MPQ. Then I downloaded the streaming client, downloaded it all. I tired to run it, but now it can't stream "Data/en-GB/wow-update-enGB-16016.MPQ "file. I even tried using the wow file in this forum.

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Was thinking that the wow I have now is MoP and I won't be able to run it till the 5th ? I hope so. Seems easy just not working for me.

dreadmonkey it's weird I never experienced this problem. Did you try to run the launcher.exe with admin rights? (to do so right click the file and select "run as administrator")

Also the files in this forum are for the english US version so I'm not sure it will work for en GB.

In your data/en-GB/ folder what is the highest wow-update-enGB-XXXXX number you got? Mine is 16057

I think from now on filefront delete files when there is no dl for a month, will try to find a new place.

dont want to clutter this, but hoping to get noticed before morning,,,,, Just patched all the english went well. When i got it copied i switched config stuff from enUS to zhCN, now everything is chinese when i load... help?

nevermind... just set everything back and renamed the launcher. checked in. Graphics changed... messin wit me stuff WoW is!

For those having troubles make sure you restore the launcher.db from zhCN to it's original value. Then all it takes is start the game, log, let it patch and you are good to go. Once you're done streaming, set launcher.db back to zhCN and you are good until next update.

I don't get why you advocate for backing up launcher files? I've never, ever done it and my games work fine, every update and every patch. This is what I do. If in fact I've done this for multiple pc's on my current vacation without fail. =s

1. Download a US/EU client of your choice via blizzard. Let it fully update.


2. Make a folder called fonts. Download one of the below

3. Find launcher.db and set it to "zhCN"


4. C/wow/WTF folder, add "" SET portal "cn" "" with no double quotes


5. Play. When updates come all you need to do is revert the set portal to "us" and then back again once the streaming client updates. I've done this and only this for all of MoP and most of Cataclysm.

Same goes for me, I never touched launcher files since MoP launch.
I only let the client download the latest patch without any further alterations, just as I do with the CN client.

You don't have to backup anything if you don't want to. But when china decide to get a different build for X reasons like it happened from time to time in the past, your backup can be useful at some point. So yeah your choice, and cool story.

can somebody please guide me to set up install wow ? i'm here in china but REALLY not tech savvy at all . i'd like to play in english . have no clue how to go about it here in china and i cant understand the above installation guide . I also do not have an account outside of china anymore .

Hi Guys,

A quick question here. It appears the U.S. game client has recently updated so the U.S. and Chinese patches are no longer in sync. I'm assuming if the game was downloaded using the foreign streaming client it wouldn't be able to connect to the Chinese servers.

Is there another method of downloading the game client?

Following Havoc's question, maybe it is possible anyhow to stop the foreign download stream and manually update to the good patch using wowwiki's patches ?
