note that:

  • Spirit is for mana and life regen; if you are not keen on accurate numbers, just keep in mind that you 100 spirit will regen 31 mana and 18 life every second
  • Intellect is for mana pool (+15mana every int point) and increases chance to perform critic (+1% every 60 int points, which isnt completely true in fact but is a good way to simplify at first)
  • Stamina is for life what intellect is for mana (+10life every sta point)
  • DPS comes for half from agility for rogues and hunter

sum up: you cant gather more than 30 squares of blue bar, that is about 10days not using your character in a rest place; rest places are inns and capitals (everywhere in)

Only one thing to remember: enhancing armor becomes less and less effective as you get more and more amor. That means +1000 armor (such as paladin improved devotion aura) will benefit more for cloth and leather;

Ex 1: mage 60 without purple item: armor 600 # 15% reduction; same mage 1600 (under paladin aura for instance) # 35% reduction: this is an extra 20% of damage reduction (you save 200 extra life every 1000 damage)
Ex 2: a 6k armor warrior 60 without shield: #52%
with 2k shield, his armor is bounced up to 8k: #59% => it isnt that effective (with the shield, 70 extra life is saved every 1000 damage)
etc, etc...

therefore the discussion about what armor or shield is better than another one doesnt really focus the armor value in most cases, but more the +attribute, +spell, mana regen, +def etc...


  • Armor = Agilite * 2 + armor item/spell
  • armors are capped at 75% of reduction
  • there is no limit in armor amount

  • magical armors helps to resist at 25%, 50%, 75% or even 100%. The higher the better.
  • there are only 5 schools that can be resisted, Holy cant be resisted.
  • In pve, you need Fire Resist to go MC and BWL, Nature to go AQs, Ice to Naxx
  • In pvp, Fire is used by mages, warlocks and shamans, Nature by shamans and druids, Arcan by mage, hunter and druid, Ice by mages, Shadow by warlocks and priests. Paladin only use holy, which is shared with priests. So fighting fire mage with a 200 fire resist armor will not be a big deal.
  • Fire resist items can be found in BRD and BRS, Nature in Maraudon and Dire Maul, Shadow in Strat and Scholo, Ice in Scholo. Arcane resist items are pretty rare.
  • Note that the physical armor is independant of magical ones. Therefore to tank MC you'd better have cloth pieces with 300 fire resist than a full plate set with 10k armor and nothing against fire. That means also that tanks shouldnt fear on rolling cloth or leather armor if these turn to have magic resist (yet the best is plate with the appropriate magical resist)

Good guide, yet not entirely correct.
Excuse me for adding my two cents.
I will talk from the Mage / Caster / Mana User point of view.

IF you are out of combat. Health never regens in combat except with some racial ability or specific buff. Mana only use SPI regen values if casters don't cast a spell (use mana) for 5 seconds and longer.

For mages, at level 60, 59.5 points of Intellect equal 1% chance to crit with spells. Varies depending on class.
(they are all between 1% CRIT / 59.2 - 60.6 INT depending on class, except Paladins which have been revamped in 2.0)
60 is a fine round number and easy to simplify, yet more accurate.

This is for normal attack spells. Binary spells such as Frost spells either land or don't. they will never ever be partially resisted. This means:
A fire mage might hit you for 300 instead of 1200 Damage, if you resisted 75% of his spell.
While fighting a Frost specced mage, if you do not resist the spell, you will eat up 100% DMG, regardless of your resist value. On the other hand, if you resist it, you get 0 DMG.

At level 60 (this being the caster's level. for resistances, the targets level is IRRELEVANT), 200 resistance, would give a resist factor of about 50%. Please be not fooled. You need 300 Resist in one school of magic in order to resist 75%. And these values would be average.
200 Fire resist against a fire mage, would mean that if you are lucky, you will eat about 2000-3000 Burst damage (if well geared) instead of double that amount in less than 4 seconds.

and PS: as a personal comment, if a tank would EVER roll on some CLOTH with some resist on it, i would personally make his life miserable by all means. he has plate drops with appropriate resists, better stats, etc. and thats what additional enchants, capes, rings, etc. are for.

hehe, everybody reacts the same Very Happy i admit if a wearing cloth class is rolling need on such an item, i personally dont think rolling over; in the meantime, if nobody needs, a cloth or leather gauntlets with a +20 resist has a much higher value than the plate ones that have no resist in that school (the loss of damage reduction is about 1 or 2%, its worthless). Then for a specific purpose, the plate gaunlets can be switch to the magic resist ones.
That is, my point here is just to explain some basic mechanics of the game, to better estimate the real value of the various items that can be worn.

well if you have some curves to be linked for magic resist (like the damage resisted average in function of the resist level), that will be appreciated, that really misses in that section.
