I can read chinese but when I type it it comes as ??? any advice?

If you're using Windows, the usual reason for this in the "Language for Non-unicode Programs" should be set to Chinese (Simplified,PRC).

You can find the option for this in the Control Panel under something like Region and Language Options, Advanced/Administrative Tab.
